Chatsworth House Garden
Capturing Atmosphere
In a world where capturing images has become a part of our daily lives it is easy to forget the importance of documenting our world through quality and timeless photography. Of the quickly grabbed images taken on a daily, hourly basis, there will be very few that actually capture the essence of the scene in front of them.
The gardens at Chatsworth have undergone the biggest transformation in nearly 200 years and during a recent tour of the gardens by garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith and head Gardener at Chatsworth, Steve Porter, I was in the privilaged position to capture the new garden transformation in its early years.
I photograph many subjects, but it is my love for gardens that is my true inspiration. The gardens at Chatsworth never fail to impress me on my many visits over the years. The new garden areas though are truly wonderful and I hope my images inspire you to visit them for yourself.
Inspired By Light
My photography is inspired by light and how this plays and dances across a scene. My photographic style is inspired not only by landscape and garden photographers, but by portraiture and how portrait photographers and artists use light to capture a human emotion and how they interpret light. I strive to capture this emotion and light in the gardens I photograph.
I like to focus the viewer on an element in the scene to draw them into the image through selective focus of a scene or plant detail. We view the world one detail at a time and this has become my inspiration in evolving my photographic style.
Garden Designer Tom Stuart Smith is one of a trio of garden designers who have worked on the development of the world famous 105 acre garden. Dan Pearson and James Hitchmough being the others. The Rock Garden, Maze Borders and the new Arcadia garden were the areas Tom has been working on.
The gardens at Chatsworth have constantly been evolving since the days of Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton’s first influences.
